Gender Selection in IVF
Gender selection requires undergoing IVF treatment. The success rate of gender selection is 100%. The only difference from a standard IVF procedure is that before transferring the embryos into the mother’s uterus, the embryos are genetically analyzed in a laboratory (PGD – Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis). This chromosomal analysis (PGD) identifies healthy embryos prior to transfer and eliminates the risk of the most common chromosomal disorders, such as Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome), Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome), Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), XXY (Klinefelter syndrome), and X0 (Turner syndrome). In this way, IVF success rates are increased, and healthy babies of the desired gender can be achieved. The key point here is that the genetic laboratory analyzing the embryos must operate effectively and efficiently.
How Long Does IVF Treatment Take in Cyprus?
After an examination by our specialist doctors, the couple’s reproductive capacity and general health condition are evaluated. Based on this assessment, the required procedures and treatment protocol are determined.
For example, if the woman’s ovarian reserve is sufficient (meaning egg retrieval can be performed), she begins treatment in her home country using simple, painless subcutaneous injections according to the treatment protocol we recommend. Around 12–13 days later, the patient comes to Cyprus with her partner for the egg retrieval. On the day of egg collection, sperm is also obtained from the man, and fertilization takes place. The fertilized eggs (embryos) are transferred into the woman’s uterus five days later. This means the couple will need to stay in Cyprus for about 5–6 days. Depending on the treatment type, this duration may sometimes be only 1–2 days. The total treatment process takes approximately 19 days.
If the patient requires egg donation, and if she is menstruating, treatment begins on the second day of her period (or at a suitable time if she is not menstruating) with oral estrogen tablets to prepare the uterine lining. On the donor’s egg retrieval day (around day 14), the male partner can come to Cyprus, even just for the day, to provide sperm. On the embryo transfer day (around day 19), the woman can also travel to Cyprus even for the day. Compared to conventional IVF, egg donation is a simpler treatment process. The stay in Cyprus is shorter, and since there is no ovarian stimulation or egg retrieval, it is a non-invasive, needle-free treatment.
In embryo donation, the male partner is not required to travel to Cyprus. The female partner only needs to come to Cyprus on the day of embryo transfer, even just for the day. Since neither partner’s reproductive cells are used, the process is much simpler. The woman simply prepares her uterine lining with oral estrogen tablets in her home country.
In sperm donation, the male partner is not required to travel to Cyprus either. Since egg retrieval will be performed on the woman, she should plan to stay in Cyprus for 5–6 days.
