What Is Pelvic Organ Prolapse? Treatment of Cystocele, Rectocele and Enterocele
Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when the muscles and connective tissues that support the pelvic floor weaken, causing the bladder (cystocele), rectum (rectocele), or small intestines (enterocele) to descend into the vagina. This condition can develop in women due to factors such as childbirth, aging, menopause, and connective tissue weakness.
In cystocele, the bladder descends into the vagina, while rectocele occurs when the rectum pushes toward the vagina from the back wall. Enterocele is the descent of the small intestines into the vagina. These conditions can often occur together.
Patients may experience symptoms such as a feeling of fullness in the vaginal area, pressure, difficulty urinating, frequent urination, constipation, difficulty during bowel movements, and discomfort during sexual intercourse. In advanced cases, this condition can significantly affect quality of life.
With surgical repair, the prolapsed organs are repositioned to their normal anatomical locations and the pelvic floor is strengthened. Thanks to modern surgical techniques, these procedures are performed in a safer and more comfortable way.
The treatment plan is determined based on the patient’s symptoms, the degree of prolapse, and overall health status. The goal is not only anatomical correction but also improving the patient’s quality of life.
At Cyprus American IVF Center, pelvic organ prolapse treatments are successfully performed using advanced surgical techniques by an experienced specialist team.
If you are experiencing pressure, prolapse, or urinary or bowel problems in the vaginal area, early evaluation is very important.
