What Is a Vaginal Hernia (A Mass Protruding from the Vagina)?
A vaginal hernia is a condition in which pelvic organs (such as the bladder, intestines, or uterus) protrude into the vagina due to weakening of the supporting tissues. This condition is commonly described as “a mass coming from the vagina” and typically has a progressive nature.
Weakening of the pelvic floor muscles can occur due to factors such as childbirth, aging, menopause, heavy lifting, chronic constipation, and genetic predisposition. As a result of this weakness, the bladder (cystocele), intestines (rectocele), or small intestines (enterocele) may descend into the vagina.
Patients often present with complaints such as a feeling of fullness in the vaginal area, a palpable mass, pressure, difficulty urinating, frequent urination, urinary incontinence, or bowel movement problems. In advanced cases, this condition may become visible externally and can significantly affect daily life.
The treatment method is determined based on the degree of prolapse and the patient’s symptoms. In mild cases, exercises and lifestyle changes may be sufficient, while in advanced cases, surgical intervention may be required. With surgical treatment, the prolapsed organs are restored to their original anatomical positions and the pelvic floor is reinforced.
Thanks to modern surgical techniques, these procedures have become safer and more comfortable. After treatment, a significant improvement in patients’ quality of life is achieved.
At Cyprus American IVF Center, vaginal hernia treatments are successfully performed using advanced surgical techniques by an experienced specialist team. An individualized treatment plan is created for each patient.
